Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn has said the Government does not want to bankrupt any religious orders

Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn has said the Government does not want to bankrupt any religious orders as they seek to make up the short fall in the €1.46bn redress fund for institutional abuse.

Yesterday, it was reported that the Cabinet had agreed to pursue them for an extra €250m to ensure a 50:50 split between the religious orders and the State.

The congregations had agreed to contribute €480m towards the redress process, however a 50:50 split would require the orders to increase that to €730m.
